Nineteenth century Brooklyn was a place where freedom and slavery for African-Americans co-existed. This workshop designed for classroom teachers in grades 4-12 will feature a curriculum that uses historical maps, documents, and census records to visualize freedom and slavery in early Brooklyn. This project-based unit culminates in students designing a campaign poster to rename a street named after a slaveowner.

Teachers will hear from Dr. Prathibha Kanakamedala, lead scholar on the In Pursuit of Freedom public history project, get an exclusive tour and viewing of the exhibition, Brooklyn Abolitionists: In Pursuit of Freedom, and take home a unit on "Mapping Freedom & Slavery." Lunch and breakfast will be served.

Brooklyn Historical Society is an approved provider of NYS CTLE credits. Participating teachers will receive 5 hours of CTLE credit.
